Spline Split Science #1 - Skin glue re-new

So your old skins have manky glue, give this a try before buying new ones or going for the full re-glue.

Welcome to Spline Split Science! We're going to make a bunch of short videos on our instagram page (@spline_snowboards) describing some splitboard tips, hacks and techniques. Since we're limited to 1 min on instagram, we'll have a longer description on here. So, with that, here's episodes 1 &2.

Did you leave your skins glued together in a hot room for months? Were they put away wet? Or maybe they're just old. At some point the glue on your skins will most likely go bad. And by bad we mean missing glue, sticky balls of glue, the skin won't stick to your board or the glue goes off yoru skin and stays on your board!

Any of the above means you have bad glue, or deteriorating glue. This first episode is a trick that can save the glue or at least make it last a little longer prior to having to re-glue your skins.

What you'll need is your normal waxing iron, some craft paper (brown paper), your skins and ideally a workbench that can potentially get sticky.

1- Layout your skin on the bench, glue side up and cover the glue with one layer of craft paper.

2- Turn your iron to about 250F and clean any old wax off the iron with a rag.

3- Once the iron is hot, place iron on the craft paper and similar to waxing you board, don't let the iron sit in one place for too long and keep it moving.

4- Eventually, moisture and some glue will transfer to the craft paper and start to discolor the paper.

5- Peel the paper off the skin (it will be hot and very sticky!)

6- The glue on the skins should look quite a bit smoother and much more even

7- Drape the skin over a railing (or similar) with the glue side out so it can cool

8- Once cool, fold up your skins like normal and go shred!

You can't really hurt your skins with this tip unless you let the iron sit or it's way too hot. Your glue is already poor so it can't really get any worse if you mess this tip up. And if this tip doesn't help, you're going to need to re-glue your skins anyways.

If you only want to spread the glue out, using parchment paper (waxed cooking paper) will work as the wax will help spread out the glue.

I use this trick a lot to extend the life of older glue and when i don't have time to re-glue a set of skins prior to a day in the mountains.
